Advice: Reality Check on Resolutions

By Sonia Miller | December 31, 2007

Q: I have a love-hate relationship with New Year’s resolutions. On the one hand, I love the idea of having a fresh slate for new possibilities. On the other hand, I’ve been dreadfully unsuccessful in honoring my commitments. After a few months, my motivation fizzles out, and I’m back where I started. Is there a way to be successful with New Year’s resolutions or should I just bag the whole idea?

A: The better way to approach the New Year is with intention rather than resolution. Intentions direct your thoughts and emotions. Resolutions direct your actions. When you allow your intention to guide the way, you leave room for The Infinite to help make things happen in your life. When you rely on resolution, however, you are essentially telling the Universe, “I’ll do it myself, thank you very much.”

Being vs. Doing is another essential distinction between intention and resolution. We live in a culture that buys into the idea that to reach your dreams you must do, do, do. The reality, however, is that to realize your dreams, you must be, be, be. And in order to be different you must put your attention on what you want, not what you don’t want.

What you manifest in your life has everything to do with where your attention is focused. Therefore, most New Year’s resolutions are doomed to fail because they are formulated around what you will do differently and what you do not want. For example, this year rather than resolving to quit smoking, intend to be healthier and focus on the desire to take more oxygen into your lungs. Instead of resolving to lose 30 lbs., (which focuses on why you dislike your body and the fat you don’t want), intend to practice more loving ways toward yourself and express more of what you already enjoy about your body.

And know this: when challenges inevitably arise, keep focusing on what you want, not what you don’t want. The Universe will guide you through the obstacles to a more expansive way of being, and this always leads to success!
