Attraction Distractions: The Missing Link in Mainstream Law of Attraction Teachings

By Sonia Miller | April 21, 2009

The Missing Link

Most Law of Attraction fans are very familiar with popular 3-step systems presented as the process for manifesting one’s desires. Rhonda Byrne, author of “The Secret” teaches us: “See it. Believe it. Receive it.” Esther Hicks, spiritual channel for Abraham offers us: “Intend it. Allow it. And it is.”

Although these systems are accurate, they do not adequately convey a fourth component that is vital to anyone hoping to realize the promise of the Law of Attraction. That component addresses the all too common problem of self-sabotage. Any seeker who practices the Law of Attraction will eventually bump into very predictable human tendencies that serve to distract them from their intended creative efforts.

These “attraction distractions” fall into four categories. The remedy for overcoming them lies not in purging the distractions from our psyches, but in learning to manage them as they arise. The missing link in mainstream Law of Attraction teachings is self-management. And the four distractions we must learn to manage are:

Our Egos

Your ego is that part of you that allows you to perceive and foster the illusion that you are separate from Source. The up side to this illusion of separation is that it allows you to experience time and space as we know it in this physical reality. It is this illusion that makes contrast and variety possible. And from this contrast, you give birth to your desires, experiencing that which you want and that which you don’t want. The challenge of the ego perspective is that, with this illusion of separation, you can also feel alone and separate from Source – your source of infinite well-being. It is this state of consciousness that requires self-management.

The self-management opportunity with the ego is to acknowledge that you are more than your ego. You have a soul-self that allows you to live life from a much larger perspective. You are greater than the conditions of your life. You are not alone; you are a part of something bigger and grander. When you are feeling alone, afraid or overwhelmed by your physical reality, the management opportunity is to remember that you have access to a power greater than your mind or body, greater than logic or luck.

Our Emotions

We all have emotional energy, and that emotional energy is here to serve us. But many of us have little idea how to use our emotional reactions in our favor. As a human tendency, our emotions become things that either control us or that we try to control. Many of us have no idea that emotions are the language of the soul. Many of us do not realize that, with the right context and understanding, our emotions can actually be the doorway to our higher guidance.

The self-management opportunity that lies in our human tendency to relate to our emotions from a context of control is to develop a relationship with our emotions that is based in honor, respect and wisdom. When we learn harness the power of our emotions, we truly unleash our creative potential.

Limiting Beliefs

We all have beliefs we have internalized as truth, but which are not truth. They are simply beliefs we’ve inherited or adopted. They form the boundaries and limitations to what we will allow ourselves to experience and have in our lives. These limiting beliefs must be identified and deconstructed so that a broader consciousness, based in truth, lets us allow more of the good that is our birthright into our experience. Some common limiting belief include: “I’m not good enough,” “I’m damaged goods,” “I’m imperfect,” “I’m not loved,” “I’m unlovable,” “There is not enough (love, money, time …),” “I must earn it,” “I don’t deserve it,” “I’m unworthy”… etc.

The self-management opportunity with limiting beliefs is to recognize them for what they are. If you are thinking or feeling negatively about something to such a degree that you just can’t shake it, it means you’ve internalized certain thoughts as truths. Once you realize that what you’re focused on is not based in truth, you can begin to examine and ultimately dismantle your beliefs so they lose the power you’ve given them through repetition, through collecting evidence on behalf of the beliefs, and through the emotional energy you’ve poured into them.

Attachment

Attachment is the opposite of letting go. It is the feeling that has us hold on tightly to a person, situation or thing we feel we must have. It is a common reaction based on the idea, conscious or unconscious, that happiness and fulfillment come from things, people and conditions outside ourselves. When we are attached to something, we make that external thing our source, rather than turning within to our true Source. When we look outside ourselves for our fulfillment, we are in essence telling ourselves we are not whole, that our wholeness is outside ourselves and that we are separate from our wholeness. When we are attached to outside things, we are looking outside of ourselves to fill in the holes inside ourselves. Attachment comes from the internal drive to feel, remember and experience our wholeness. But it comes only from looking within to Divine Spirit to experience the wholeness that is already there.

The self-management opportunity that arises when you are feeling attached to something is to practice the art of letting go. At times, letting go can be incredibly difficult. But letting go is the only solution when attachment is pulling you off course from your co-creative efforts. The thing about letting go is that you cannot let IT go unless you have something ELSE to take hold of when you do. That something else is Spirit. To effectively manage waves of attachment, you must replace the thing you think is your source (of happiness, of freedom, of money) with your true source – Source Energy – over and over and over again.

The Law of Attraction truly is all that people say it is: a body of knowledge, based in ancient wisdom that has the capacity to help us remember our infinite nature as co-creators. If, however, you still struggle to experience its full potential in your life, rather than giving up on it, consider going deeper. When the Law of Attraction “appears” to fail, it is not because the concepts are flawed. It is only because we need to expand our understanding of it. By incorporating self-management into your creative efforts, those previously pesky obstacles will begin to melt away, opening a new world of infinite possibilities for your life!
