One of the foundational principles that determine what you will experience in your reality is this:

Where your attention goes the energy flows.

This means that if you put your attention on things that make you unhappy or uncomfortable, the creative energy of the Universe will essentially flow to and through those thoughts, give them life, and poof! They become a part of your reality.

The reverse is true as well: Put your attention on that which brings you peace, comfort, hope and joy, and the creative energy of the Universe will flow through those thoughts, and bring them to life in your experience.

Your challenge and opportunity as the Ultimate Manifestor of your life is not to understand this concept. It is to actually become more and more intentional about how you direct your attention, moment by moment.

From Resisting to Redirecting

The concept is simple, but not necessarily easy. Why?

Because when we are told to “NOT” put attention on something, what do we do? We actually put our attention on it. Example: Don’t think about a pink elephant. What are you thinking about? Right.

The key then, is not to RESIST a thought that is contrary to what you wish, but to REDIRECT your thought from the “undesired” to the “desired.” What you resist persists.

So, your opportunity is to shift from resisting to redirecting your thoughts. From battling to befriending.

Example

You’d like to manifest a fulfilling romantic relationship. You’ve just had another one come to an end where you experienced a newly discovered dynamic which you dislike. You catch yourself thinking, “Ugg, it’s just one thing after another! I’ll never have a relationship!” Your attention becomes fixated on the latest unpleasant character flaw you had to deal with.” You direct a lot of energy mentally complaining and picking your ex apart. Guess what? This gives what you DON’T WANT a whole lot of energy.

Instead of resisting or battling that which frustrates you, give yourself the opportunity to seek out the best of the situation. First say, “yes” to the frustration so that it can release. (Telling yourself to get over unpleasant feelings is another form of resistance.) Then redirect your attention to positive possibilities instead of deciding this experience determines the fate of your future.

“Yes I’m frustrated. That’s okay. And now I’m even clearer about what I don’t want in a relationship which makes me even clearer about what I DO want. AND I learned that I ignored my instinct. I’ll never do that again. So, now I’m wiser and more ready for something better! As a matter of fact, the truth is that I rarely repeat the same mistake twice. I always learn something. And every relationship I have is better than the last. I’m moving in the right direction.”

Awareness is Key

In this example your attention has been redirected away from what you don’t want to what you do want. Where your attention goes the energy flows.

Being intentional about where your attention goes is truly a Way of Being. It takes practice. The more you do it, the easier it gets. And the more you do it, the better you get at letting unpleasant experiences guide you to more and deeper awareness about the thoughts and beliefs you hold.

One of the trickiest aspects of becoming more intentional is catching yourself when you’re being unintentional. In other words, our unconscious default thinking can be our greatest saboteur.

So, the key is to become AWARE of your default thinking. Once you’re aware, you can practice Recognizing the resistance and Redirecting your thoughts. The following exercise is designed to raise your awareness, so that you can effectively practice this tenet.

PREP:

Before even attempting Recognize and Redirect (R&R), take 15 minutes to sit down and consider a life goal or dream you have: Expanded Prosperity? Fulfilling Relationship? A trip to Australia? An advanced college degree? Once you’ve identified your goal or dream, make a list of every thought and feeling you usually have on the subject. I’m talking about the very human, knee-jerk reactions of doubt, insecurity and discouragement not what you think are the “right answers.”

PRACTICE:

This list of “negative default thinking” will become your list of Resistance Triggers. Now that you’re aware, every time you think one of these thoughts, allow them to TRIGGER the awareness that you have an opportunity to REDIRECT your attention intentionally.

AFFIRMATIONS:

• I am willing to recognize all limiting thoughts and easily redirect them toward infinite possibilities!
• I am willing to have my attention easily guided to the highest possibility under all conditions.
• I am willing to make the best of every situation no matter what!

When you find yourself judging, criticizing, or rejecting something within you or your life, your opportunity is to practice accepting it. Practice being willing to see it from a broader perspective – even if you have NO IDEA what that broader perspective is.

The fact is that oftentimes, we DON’T get to see the perfection in a difficult situation. Sometimes, we don’t get to see the divine perfection within our life time – only from the MUCH broader non-physical perspective when we die and our consciousness re-emerges into the non-physical realm of the Absolute – can we see the perfection. Sometimes you do get to see the perfection when the challenge has passed and you have time, distance and a new perspective. I’m sure most of you have had that experience – where you look back on a time of adversity, or an aspect of yourself that you resisted, but in hindsight you can now see how it all served you or a higher good?

When you can’t see the perfection, or can’t accept what is, the place to begin is WILLINGNESS. Willingness is always the place to begin. Manifestation is much more about releasing resistance than it is about visualizing or affirming what you want.  The better you are at releasing resistance, the more effective you are as a manifestor!  Why?  Because when you shift from resistance to acceptance and surrender – you open the doors to the infinite well-being that is already here.

So.. for let’s say for the month of December practice accepting whatever you have been judging and resisting about you and your life, so that you can begin to see and feel your wholeness. So that you can begin to see yourself as an individual expression of Source Energy. (If you need a little more context for this, read the previous article.)

If you have goals around prosperity, you’ll want to look at what is it about your current financial situation that you judge. Your debt? Your income? Your habits? Practice accepting what is, and seeing all of your financial experience as whole, perfect and complete – even if you can’t imagine how this is so… simply be willing.

If you have goals are around your body or health, look at where you are holding judgments – trying to separate yourself from what is. Understand that all of it, every aspect of the shadow side of your experience is part of the whole. Practice accepting it. Be willing to see the perfection. That what is is PART of the whole that is Source.

If your goals are around relationships, look at where you’ve held judgements – of yourself, of others? Practice suspending judgment. Practice being willing to trust that there is perfection here, even if you cannot see it.

People approach the holiday season in different ways. Some in joyful anticipation, some not so much.

For me the holiday season has been a time of connection – not just with friends and family, but also with myself and my life. I always love to use this time to reflect on what the past year has been about, acknowledging successes and blessings, while taking the opportunity to bring closure to less pleasant experiences. 

As many of you know and as some of you don’t, it just so happens that 2010 was one of the hardest years of my life on a personal level. And yet it is with joy, love and a healthy dose of bewilderment, that I can say it has also turned out to be one of the most expansive, healing and transformational years of my life. I have suffered deep personal losses, and yet, I feel more alive, more free, more clear and more abundant than ever!

Despite great adversity, my business revenue increased by 50% (this is after a 100% increase in 2008). I have a wonderful new Admin Assistant, Lisa. I’m in a new home. My children are thriving. And the clients I’m honored to work with are manifesting success, healing and transformation of all kinds! This is a very personal message from me to you, which I truly hope
you’ll take the time to read. It has turned out to be a bit long. I
hope you’ll print it out and read it over a cup of coffee or tea.
It seems that I’ve written this type of letter to you several times
in the past year and a half. The kind of letter that goes something
like… “Sorry I’ve been absent for a while, this is what’s been
happening, and… I’m back!” Well, for someone like me who has
identified a bit with herself on being the “pillar of strength” and
the “dependable one”, this recurring phenomenon has been a bit
frustrating to say the least.

And yet… now that I’ve been on this path where my only choice has
been to SURRENDER, ACCEPT, and ADAPT long enough to see a
bigger picture emerging, I’m here today to tell you that I have a
message for you. And that message is coming to you through the
experience of my life.

Before I get into the message, I’d like to give you some background
so that the message makes sense.

Anyone who has read my book or done any work through Success for
the Soul knows that I’ve prided myself on not only being able to
make my own dreams come true – big giant life dreams – but that I’m
pretty darn good at helping others make their dreams come true. And
the truth is that none of that has changed. Since 2002 my soul-mate
husband and I manifested an amazing life in wine-country Oregon, we
had two beautiful children after struggling with infertility, and I’d written
and published my dream book, which became a best-seller… to name
a few.

SIMULTANEOUSLY, life was presenting me with tremendous personal
challenges: In 2005 my mother had been diagnosed with lung cancer
and I became her primary caregiver for four years until she passed in
May of 2009. As I looked forward to healing and reclaiming my life,
extenuating circumstances triggered a series of “earthquakes” that
affected our sense of security and safety regarding our home life
(which, among other things included the joys of a legal dispute), and
most recently, in the wee hours of Easter Sunday morning, I discovered
that my marriage was ending, in a most shocking, unexpected and
painful way (by divorce not death).

At a time when my life’s work was taking off like a rocket, as Source
Energy was supporting me in reaching an international audience, as
new and improved coaching programs were coming on line… my
personal world was turned upside down.

As all spiritual beings living a human experience I had to give myself
the space to process the shock and pain. I was living a paradox…
part of me wanted the space and permission to make it all about
ME… to curl up into a fetal position, hide under the blankets and
disappear for a few months. While the grown-up part of me knew I
had to be strong for my children. I had clients who had entrusted
their hopes and dreams with me. I had financial responsibilities to
honor. I simply didn’t have the luxury to “go away”.

So, what did I do? I did what I’ve been doing, what I’ve been
teaching, and what I’ve been practicing for all these years. I turned
to Source. I turned to God. But I did it in a way and to a depth I’ve
never gone before. I turned it ALL over, really and truly ALL to God.
Every day. Every minute. Every care. Every question. Every decision.
Every concern. I turned over my need to know. My addiction t o
reasoning. My love of control. My desire for order. I turned over my
fears. My worry about the children. I turned over my business. My
clients. My finances. I turned over difficult conversations I needed
to have. It turned over my physical health and well-being.

I THOUGHT I had let God live my life for me and through me before.
But like this? Never.

With all of my God time, some things became clear very quickly.

Firstly, I KNEW WHY this was happening…

I HAD ASKED FOR IT.

You’re thinking to yourself WHAT?! How could you have possibly
asked for this? Well, this sort of thing happens ALL the time. We
set goals and intentions. We ask the Universe for change. But when
things DO change, we forget we asked for it! Not only that, but we
don’t like HOW the change is unfolding. We ask God for help, but
try to tell God how to do her job. (And don’t even THINK about
trusting God!)

As for me, what happened is that back in 2009 I had declared to the
Universe, “I want to KNOW that God is my Source. My ONLY. My
EVERY. My ALL! I want to get it at a cellular level, so that I no
longer have to try to convince myself of this. I want to move BEYOND
intellectual understanding to deep, spiritual KNOWING.”

So, what happened? I manifested the exact experiences I needed to
have no choice, but to turn to God for everything. Every external
structure in my life that I used to count on to feel safe and secure
was stripped away. With my mother’s illness, my freedom (my
ability to live life on my terms) was confiscated. When my home
life crumbled into a chaotic mess of conflict, threat, and
abandonment… the illusion that safety and security come through
external comforts vanished. And when my marriage ended, my
“religion of relationship”, and my earthly identity burned away to
ashes.

As a result, I was left with nothing but my relationship with and
trust in God. I knew I could be strong and loving for my children,
because there is just something super-human that gets activated
when a woman becomes a mother. But I had no idea how I could
possibly be present and helpful to my clients, let alone get
through each day. And yet, I had to. So, before each client
session, before each class, and before each Q&A session, I’d turn
everything over to God. I would say, “Okay God. The life-coach
formerly known as Sonia is no longer here. Work through me so
that I may serve this person in the highest way.”

I did this for EVERY single professional interaction and exchange,
and what happened was quite astounding. Not only would amazing
wisdom come through and my clients felt served, but I felt better.
Letting God work through me, FOR another, uplifted me. Of course I
alw ays knew about this phenomenon. But to experience it when it
took everything I had just to answer the telephone… this was a
whole new level.

And then… the feedback started coming in.

“Sonia, I don’t know what’s happened to you, but something is
different. I’ve never heard or felt you be so powerful.”

“Sonia, I got off the phone the other day crying, and I knew that I
had to have you as my coach for the rest of my life.”

And then… I started letting my clients know what had happened in
my life and the feedback continued.

“Sonia, I have no idea how, but what you’re bringing is more
inspiring, confident and clearer than I’ve ever heard from you.”

My response was always the same: I’m letting God work through me,
because there is nothing of “me” left.

Which brings me to why I’m writing this letter to you today:

As a result of this unfolding in my life, my work is changing. I
don’t know where it is going for sure, or for how long it will be
this way, but I’m clear about what I need to do right now. I
haven’t written an ezine or a blog post in two or more months.
Instead I’m being guided away from writing toward staying
connected with all of you in a more interactive, intimate way.
So… for a while, instead of providing my Soul Food electronic
newsletter as my primary way of offering tips, tools, inspiration
and information, I will be facilitating a Free LIVE Q&A Forum call
twice a month. This tele-conference series is called:

The calls will be up to 60 minutes in length. I will begin by
delivering whatever inspired message seems to be coming through
at the time. (There’s a lot of that happening these days.) And then
I’ll open the lines up for Q&A. Anyone on the call can ask any
questions they have about personal success, healing,
transformation, manifestation, navigating the illusion that is our
physical experience here on earth, the law of attraction, letting
God work through you… things like that. My intention is and always
will be to answer questions and support those that are called to be
there in the highest way, as guided by Source.
