If you’re like most people who enjoy an opportunity to start the year with a clean slate, full of promise and anticipation, it is hard to resist making a New Year’s resolution or two. However, if you’re like most people, despite your sincerest intention, you may also find your resolutions fading in motivation, resolve and ultimately results.

As a life coach, my job is not only to give people encouragement and access to know-how. A huge part of what I do is support people to activate and honor their commitment to themselves. I’ve found that there are three necessary components, which if missing leaves you with nothing more than discouragement and a slightly more wounded belief in yourself.

The three keys to keeping your New Year’s promises to yourself are decision, commitment and transformation. I invite you to suspend what you think you know about these concepts and open up to the possibly of discovering a new angle that can help you cross the bridge from dream to reality with the things that matter most in your life.

DECISION

The first step in keeping your promise to yourself is to activate the power of decision.

• Decision is an INTERNAL shift.

• Decision requires a leap of faith.

• Decision occurs when you move from wanting and wishing to ownership.

Until you claim your dream. Until you can declare full out, “I WANT THIS,” it will remain a dream, a fantasy. The thing that often sabotages people before they even get started is that they won’t OWN their dream because they think they need to know HOW it is all going to come to fruition. People want a plan, a map, a manual before they will own it. But we’ve got it all backwards. The how-to of your dream does not reveal itself UNTL you make the decision. And even then, the Universe will often give you the how-to’s on a need to know basis only. This is very frustrating for the ego mind. But it is how manifestation works. You must DECIDE that you will manifest the dream and completely let go of the How. The How comes later.

COMMITMENT

The next vital key to keeping your promise to yourself is to activate the power of commitment. This is your way of telling the Universe and all the energetic forces at your disposal that you mean business. It is as if once you said, “I want this.” The Universe responded, “Oh yeah? Prove it.” You must prove to the Universe that you mean business once you make your decision. You must not only commit to taking action of some kind, you must engage in that action. Understand that your ego-mind will resist your decision to change. Why? Because when you activate the decision to change, if that decision is aligned with your soul, it means you will grow. And if your soul’s self-expression grows, your ego-mind has less control over you. The ego-mind is about self-preservation. With this understanding, you’ll need to meet your ego, pound for pound, with a “quitting is not an option” antidote. The following may not feel very spiritually-oriented, but the ego is not spiritually oriented. It operates in the physical world and it is very strong. The following tools prevent your ego-mind from besting your commitment, so that you can keep your promises to yourself.

• Give your word such that breaking your promise has a very high consequence. (Examples: Breaking your word would disappoint someone you’d never want to let down. Quitting your commitment would cause you great embarrassment.)

• Find a symbol that constantly reminds you that quitting could very well be more painful than sticking through the commitment. This can be the simple undeniable knowledge that what you’ve done in the past does NOT work for you. Or, the memory of a loved one who could have been spared suffering had they, let’s say, stuck to a fitness commitment. Create a touchstone for this symbol: a photo on the fridge, a mantra on your dashboard, a pendant you wear daily.

• Put your money where your mouth is. In other words. spend money on something that is in alignment with your decision. Invest in coaching or a class. Something that requires you to physically participate. Something for which you are accountable. (Do-it-yourself audios and books don’t count. They don’t require you to show up and be accountable.) Money is one of the great commitment keepers. Especially, if you pay in full because then the back-door is shut.

TRANSFORMATION

If decision is an internal shift, and commitment is an external action, transformation speaks to a way of BEING. The third and final key to keeping your promises to yourself rests in the understanding that the satisfaction you seek from setting goals and creating resolutions in the first place comes not from crossing a bunch of goals off your check list (i.e. lost the weight, bought the house, got the car, etc.), but from the long-lasting transformation that is possible when we understand that success comes not only from “doing” things differently, but from “being” differently in our lives. After all, the reason we create New Year’s resolutions in the first place is because of how we think we will feel when we accomplish them.
But here’s the thing: you can accomplish any goal through hard work and a lot of “doing,” but if you don’t identify the way you need to BE differently, a) you’ll end up with the manifested goal and the satisfaction will be short-lived (then on to the next goal) and b) it is likely the manifested goal will not last. You will be much more effective in keeping your promises to yourself if you focus more on how you need to BE differently in 2011 in order to manifest your goal, than on getting the goal itself.

• Remember it is about transformation, not the goal. If you make your New Year’s resolution about the goal, it will be easy to break your promise to yourself when you don’t see results. If, however, you’re more interested in long-lasting transformation, then you will embrace the necessary discipline of your commitment and practice what you promised based on faith. (Helpful hint: when your commitment feels boring, or unproductive try some self talk like, “Was the old way working? No? Then keep going.”

• Long term vs. short-term. Quick fixes are a myth. Most goals and dreams are ultimately unsatisfying unless they are a) in alignment with your goals and b) sustainable. If we lose weight only to gain it back, that manifested goal causes pain. If you make a lot of money on a project, but don’t create the necessary changes to sustain prosperity, the hills and valleys of financial flow can be exhausting and stressful.

• Create goals that are about being vs. doing. How you word and focus your goal has great impact on your ability to keep your promise to yourself. For example, rather than, “In 2011, I will run my first 5K,” try “In 2011, I’ll give myself the chance to fall in love with running, but committing to run 3 times per week for the entire year.” Rather than, “In 2011, I resolve to lose 30 pounds,” try instead, “In 2011 I resolve to incorporate eating 5 servings of fruit and vegetables every day.”

My coaches challenge to you: This New Year resolve to keep your promises to yourself! Experiment with the three vital keys above and see what happens. You have nothing to lose but a bunch of broken promises!

I’m doing my second book signing ever!  I know… can you believe it?  Authors are “supposed” to do book signings.  But I was always clear that this type of traditional book promotion was not going to work – not while my mom was sick and not while I want to be as available as possible for my kids.  Why am I telling you this, because this morning I’m compelled to drive home the point that when you are manifesting your dreams, you do NOT have to be limited by conventional wisdom about what it takes to manifest that dream.  Just because people tell you you have to go to college doesn’t mean you have to to create the business you want.  Just because people tell you that self-published authors can’t experience success, or that you have to tour the country to promote it doesn’t mean it is true (that’s what “they” told me and my book has hit #1 metaphysical book on Amazon.com AND is being pursued by 15 publishers in foreign countries for translation and publication rights to date).  Just because some voice in your head says you need to make more money, or lose weight, or handle a certain circumstance BEFORE you can have a fulfilling relationship, change jobs, or take that trip you’ve always wanted to take – DOESN’T MEAN ITS TRUE.

People who think “reality” tells us what’s possible, will forever be limited to the reality they’ve seen or heard about.  People who study the Law of Attraction and explore the TRUE NATURE OF REALITY, understand that ANYTHING is possible!  That we live in an INFINITE Universe and that OUR nature is INFINITE.

Anyway, just my little pep talk for the morning.

Beyond that… Hey! I’m doing a book signing.  Not because I “have” to, but because I want to.  Right here in my own backyard, Salem, Oregon.  It is being held at the “First Wednesday” event that happens every month in Salem, which means all kinds of vendors will have their doors open to the public, to share their abundance and celebrate the holiday season.

Having dabbled in most energetic tools for divination and insight (numerology, palmistry, I Ching, astrology, tarot, etc.) I knew this would be a significant date.

So I did a little research and found an article by master numerologist Hans Decoz. Amidst his in depth analysis, he explains that this date marks a significantly magnified energy of endings and beginnings. I don’t know about you, but I can surely feel it! And it is playing out for many of my clients and friends in powerful and sometimes very challenging ways.

What is one to do during these times of change and transition? Keep engaging the power of Letting Go. It is, as I often say, the key that many seekers miss in their quest to understand and own their power as the intentional manifestors of their own lives.

With this in mind, I practice many disciplines to keep my attention on what I want and where I want to go.  This helps me to gently, yet firmly direct my creative mind in the most intentional way, as consistently as possible.

One of my favorite practices is to pair exercise with audio.  I rarely listen to music when I walk or hike, even though I LOVE music.  What I do instead is listen to teleclasses and podcasts from all sorts of wonderful, life-affirming, empowering resources… whatever I can get my hands on.

I’m back and it is good to be home.  It was 110 degrees in Texas.  Wow!  That’s intense.  Oregon feels so soothing in comparison.

Well, once I get through all of my re-entry stuff, I’ll have more to say… but in the name of endless expansion and evolution.  Has anyone out there read Michael Beckwith’s newest book, “Spiritual Liberation”?  I downloaded the audio book and have been listening to it.  Chapter 2 is about “Evolved People” and it lists 7 key traits.  I loved it.  Made me realize where I’m living from from connection to Source and where my ego is still holding on tight – “forgiveness” – yep!
