Law of Attraction - Tithing Q & A

By Sonia Miller | August 29, 2008

I’ve had numerous people email me with questions about tithing.  I don’t claim to be the expert on the subject, but from I have read, and more importantly experienced, I do believe there is a spiritual principle at work when one acknowledges Source as the source of ALL abundance through the act of circulating back 10% of one’s blessings.  Please comment below with your thoughts and ideas on the subject.

Q:

I’m somewhat confused about tithing.  I understand the principle.  It’s the details that twist me around.  I use to tithe 10% to different environmental organizations.  It seems the more you gift them, the more they solicit.  More wasted paper, and seemingly greed (or so it felt to me) with the "more, more MORE!" way of interacting with contributors.

I don’t belong to nor even really believe in the concept of "church" but I do understand that as a place many people find their spiritual support.  Gifting directly to people speaks to me more personally.  Food bank, grassroots efforts at replanting rainforest (individuals, not organizations), helping people help themselves (KIVA, Habitat for Humanity), and gifting massage services makes me feel like I’m contributing to the higher vibration of the planet.  Tithing is "supposed" to be selfless, yet I see that we also do it to benefit ourselves by re-circulating that 10% to not get "stuck" ourselves, and also get the warm fuzzies from helping others.  Or is it the warm fuzzies that indicate we’re tithing in the right direction?

A:

Spiritual teachings do make a distinction between "giving in general" and tithing to your "source of spiritual nourishment."

A few books I’d recommend are Spiritual Economics by David Butterworth, The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity by Catherine Ponder, and "I’m Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams. I am. I am. I am." by Thomas Pauley.

As for me, I always look at the vibration beneath the thoughts, emotions and actions related to my choices.  If you can get to the point where you identify if there is an energy of resistance or allowing, then you’ll be able to connect with the higher truth of it all.

There are a wide array of opinions about tithing, complete with religious strings attached and the emotional and mental energies of guilt, obligation, and judgment. However, if there is one thing I know for sure it is this:  If you are not giving your tithes from a place of true gratitude and acknowledgement for all that you have, for all of your blessings, then whatever your vibration is when you give, so will be your experience.

Tithing is not like making monthly "protection" premiums to the mafia - "Okay God, if I pay you 10% you’ll take care of me, right?"  Although some may feel that it works out that way.  Tithing is a spiritual practice to remind you that your only Source of supply is Source Energy.  Tithing is a discipline that pushes you to connect with gratitude, to remember that you ARE taken care of.  Tithing is an opportunity let go of the tendency to control every little thing because you are "trying to survive, and instead to surrender in trust to the flow of life - to trust in the ebb and flow of things.  Supply (money) follows the rhythms of nature - the ocean goes in and out, the moon waxes and wanes, the seasons offer bounty and go dormant - back and forth, flow.

And… on a more practical note, as long as you tithe to Your Source of spiritual nourishment, no matter what it looks like (i.e. The Sierra Club if that is how you connect with Spirit), and you do it with the intention of practicing higher spiritual principles, then tithing will bless you with more than warm and fuzzies, it will strengthen your relationship with Source as the source of your well-being under all conditions.
