Losing Weight vs. Releasing Weight
By Sonia Miller | May 5, 2008
I friend emailed me in response to my recent article called “Losing Weight with the Law of Attraction.” He raised the question about using the term “loosing” weight vs. “releasing” weight, and some compelling food for thought on the subject. Now, my friend did not address the issue from an NLP perspective (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), which surprised me because he is trained in NLP and I know he believes strongly in the power of words, as do I. Another friend who had done some hypnosis work around weight loss also shared with me the importance of not using the word “lose” with regard to the desire to shed pounds because the unconscious mind believes that it is losing something.
So, I offer you Trae’s comments here. I thought it important to post it separately rather than risking it get lost in the comments section.
What do you think? I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts - maybe from some NLP practitioners or hypnotherapists – on the subject!

Is it possible that for some it is as simple as “not wanting to get in trouble for loosing something?”
This is and has been the approach I have taken for a long time. It was and has been my intuition that there are some people who, after “loosing” the weight gain it back because deep down they felt guilty for losing it and thought they might get in trouble if they did not come clean about it, find it again. I believe that for some people the parental authority in our minds is still telling us we “better not loose that” or you’ll be in trouble. If that message was strong enough and occurred enough then is it possible that is one of the reasons people cannot “loose” weight for fear of getting in trouble?
A dear friend of mine decided to RELEASE the extra weight and she let go of I believe 120 pounds, or more, in less than a year. That was how she decided it was time after attempting to “loose” weight several times. she just decided to release it so there was no need to go looking for it. Check the connotations between the two words: Loose or Release – which would you prefer and which is a gentler message to the psyche?”
