The Anti-Success Story: Inspiration of Another Kind

By Sonia Miller | January 21, 2008

This past week I was reminded that success stories aren’t always inspiring. As a matter of fact, they can be down-right disheartening.

Two clients recently shared with me that rather than feeling hope and possibility after reading some of the success stories I post, they felt something more like: What’s wrong with me? I’ve been doing the work. I’ve been patient. When do I get mine?

The truth is that it is just as important to hear about the rocky journeys travelled as it is to hear about the victories. People need to hear the anti-success stories. They need to hear about how hard it is sometimes - the hopelessness, the frustration, and the disillusionment.

So, I want to make something perfectly clear. Although I stand firmly in the belief that we can make our dreams come true if we’re willing to do the work, sometimes, it is down-right hard. There have been more times than I can count when I have sat with people in grief, exasperation, depression and rage. I know so many seekers who have fought for and held on to dreams for decades. Despite the struggle, they manage to persevere and keep the flame of hope alive.

These anti-success stories reminder us that just like the sun which shines even when we see only black clouds and rain, infinite well-being and abundance is our true nature even when all evidence appears to the contrary. Our job is not to believe this. Our job is to remember it.

Like my mother, who has been travelling her own road with lung cancer for almost three years said the other day, “He who still fights is not dead!”
