What Keanu Reeves Can Teach Us About Relationships

By Sonia Miller | February 8, 2008

Dear Seeker,

You can’t enter the month of February without being reminded of Valentines Day at least once. And so, as I was pondering Relationships (with a capital “R”) I found my mind recalling a favorite scene from the 1989 film Parenthood. In it Keanu Reeves’ dim-witted character has a spiritually profound moment in the kitchen as he declares, “You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, to drive a car – hell, you even need a license to catch a fish. But they’ll let any “butt-scratching jerk” be a father.”

Sometimes I feel similarly about Relationships. We all have them. Most of us want them. And yet many of us fumble our way through less than satisfying relationships with little or no training.

Why is it that no one expects us to know math, reading or writing without going to school, but because we talk to people, hang out with people, and interact a bit we are supposed to know how relationships work?

I think some of us are fortunate enough to be blessed with relationship skills. However, I find that many more people secretly feel like dorks at best, and social failures at worst. I was one of those people. So much so that when I found myself feeling utterly lost after graduating college, I sought a metaphysical counselor who specialized in relationships. She put me on a path that marked the beginning of ten years of intensive study.

Oh sure, there’s always more to learn, but I can honestly say that today I feel confident as a “relationship practitioner.” How about you? Are you happy with your relationships? If not, are you willing to do something about it? Just like anything else, relationships take skill. And these skills are learnable.

The main difference between developing relationship skills and developing an academic or trade skill is that it is much more personal, vulnerable and intimate. And so, this kind of schooling may require significantly more courage. But, if you’re willing to throw up your hands and admit, “I just don’t know how to get different results.” And you’re willing to find the training you need, then you’ll be on your way to developing a skill set that will not only serve you in all areas of life, but will give your more meaning and satisfaction than you ever imagined.

Choose Your Reality! tm
