Legoland and Beyond

By Sonia Miller | January 29, 2008

You know that joke: “How do you make God laugh?…. Make plans.” Well, God must have had a good laugh on me this past week.

I had BIG plans for my vacation. So much expectation built up over six months. I took our kids to Los Angeles to visit my sister. Hadn’t been in her neck of the woods for seven years. It was going to be quality sister time with the kids. Off to Legoland and sunshine. Good food. No computers. Lots of sleeping in.

Weeeelllllll…. the reality was strep throat for two kids and my sister, multiple phone calls and trips to doctors and pharmacies. An allergic reaction to penicillin, a fare dose of rain and sleepless nights worrying over coughing little ones.

So what’s the moral of the story? For me it is: practice what you preach.

When bad things happen, we often want to ask “Why?” We want to feel sorry for ourselves. (Believe me, I had to really keep this one at bay.) And we want to beat ourselves up with the metaphysical hammer by dissecting our thoughts, questioning, “What did I do to create this?”

These questions have value, but if you’re not careful you can slide down a slippery slope of dis-empowerment. So, let yourself feel bad. Honor the emotions. Let them release. Then ask the empowering questions: “What now?” “How do I make the best of this?” “What do I need to do to surrender and release resistance?”

And so that is what I did. In spite of the crappy things that happened, we still had a good trip. We had quality time together, good conversations, good food, fun and nice photos to remember the positive. And when I finally had a moment to meditate, an “aha” came to me. I had been asking Source for healing in my family, and this “perfect storm” showed me where it had already occurred.

Bad things happen. That’s just life. But by practicing the mental, emotional and spiritual disciplines that are available to all of us, we keep our minds open so that we can perceive the infinite good that is ever-present.
