Words of Wisdom from a Recovering Control Freak

By Sonia Miller | March 12, 2008

I almost named this post “Surrendering,” but it occurred to me that there is an important distinction between letting go of control and surrendering. These two states of consciousness are related, but are not the same. Both are vital to harnessing the power of the Law of Attraction.

To let go of control is to release your grip. You know you are being controlling when you need to be right, when you think you know how something should be, when you want things your way, when you are trying to fix something or someone that you think should be different. Physically, you will usually feel a constriction or a tightness in your body. When you are being controlling you might feel alone, unsupported, afraid, or in survival mode. You may feel like no one is watching out for you. Consequently you feel you must take care of things because if you don’t, nobody will.

Surrendering is the next spiritual opportunity after letting go of control. To surrender is to give yourself over in trust. So, once you let go of your grip, you don’t just tumble screaming through the air, you let yourself fall in faith that you will be caught – that no matter what happens, you will be okay.

Control is an illusion. None of us actually have control. What we have is power. Our power lies not in making things happen as we think they should. Our power lies in letting Infinite Good flow through us. But Infinite Good can express only when we let it. When we become attached to how we think things should be, we control the flow of good and limit the possibilities.

It is more difficult to let go of control, when you have nothing to replace it with. The trick to letting go of control is to replace it with trust. Trust in what? Trust in a higher good. As an experiment, practice noticing when you need to be in control. And when you do, remember you have a choice: to control, or to let go and surrender in trust. Control acts like a door that shuts blessings out. As you loosen your grip on the door of your life and surrender, the door to the Universe will open, and the blessings will flow in.

Choose Your Reality! tm
